The very first car designed and built in Australia came off the production line in 1948. Just three years later, the very first all-Australian "ute" was born. A forerunner of today's highly popular sport utility vehicles, the 1951 Holden ute quickly became the universal choice of farmers and all who yearned for a genuine Holden ute that could handle the rough roads of Australia. Ever since its inception, Holden had been advertised as "Australia's Own Car." Now the new ute was billed as "Australia's Own Ytility." It combined surprisingly good acceleration with a comfortable cabin for three and a generous load area. The trouble-free 6 cylinder engine could easily handle 30 miles on a single gallon of petrol. Touted as "the best utility value," the ute was "available on convenient hire purchase terms" through GMAC, the General Motors finance company. Now the very first Holden ute has been recreated in a handsomely appointed die-cast model exclusively for The Golden Anniversary Holden set. This replica is painted in the original Nankeen Cream factory colour with a golden brown interior and a chocolate brown tonneau. |
